Nate Marquardt Excited by his Quick Finish

“I had watched tape on him and kind of noticed how he telegraphed when he kicks and I have a lot of counters for kicks and stuff. I hurt my ankle a couple of weeks ago and I was working with my buddy Dwayne and I asked him ‘How do I counter this if I can’t do my normal stuff?’ He told me ‘Just step in and throw an overhand right as he kicks.’ It was crazy how it worked so easily. This was a highlight reel finish and I’m very excited.”

Now UFC middleweight contender Nate Marquardt talks post-fight about finishing jiu-jitsu phenom Demian Maia just 21 seconds into their 185-pound affair at UFC 102. Nate, undoubtedly has risen to the top of a short list of potential candidates looking to challenge current division freak-of-nature, Anderson “The Spider” Silva. Will Marquardt go right to the top? Or will Hendo be first in line, after his crushing win over Michael Bisping? Or, possibly, the UFC may match Henderson v Marquardet for a possible number #1 contender match?

I doubt it. With a middleweight division somewhat lacking in title challengers and a champion hungry for blood, the UFC are going to try and gather as many contenders as possible. Marquardt has earned his shot, the only question remains is when will he get it.

Couture Signs 6 fight Deal with UFC

MISC MMA SubmissionsFormer five-time UFC champion Randy Couture and UFC President Dana White announced after Saturday’s “UFC 102: Couture vs. Nogueira” event in Portland, Oregon that Couture had signed a 28-month, six-fight extension with the promotion to finish out his MMA career inside the Octagon.

The 46-year-old Couture, had one fight remaining on his previous contract, dropped a unanimous decision to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the main event of Saturday’s pay-per-view card, but looked impressive in defeat.

Following back-to-back losses at heavyweight to Nogueira and heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar, White expressed his confidence that Couture can remain competitive in the heavyweight division, but is open to him returning to light heavyweight, where he’s a two-time title-holder with wins over Tito Ortiz and Chuck Liddell.

“He’s proven he can stay in there and hang with the heavyweights if that’s what he wants to do, [but] I think he’s a beast at 205 pounds,” said White at the post-UFC 102 press conference.

With the decision left in his hands, Couture appeared open to returning to 205-pounds, where showdowns with champ Lyoto Machida and middleweight title-holder Anderson Silva could be on the horizon, along with possible rematches against Liddell and Ortiz.

“I’m interested in interesting fights,” said Couture. “There’s a lot of guys in both divisions that are interesting to fight.”

ufc-102Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Randy Couture, Nate Marquardt, and Jake Rosholt each earned $60,000 “fight night” bonuses at Saturday’s UFC 102 event at the Rose Garden Arena in Portland, Oregon, UFC President Dana White announced at the post-fight press conference.

UFC 102 headliners and heavyweight legends, Nogueira and Couture were awarded “Fight of the Night” honors for their three-round war that capped off the pay-per-view event.

Marquardt beat out Thiago Silva’s 95-second KO of Keith Jardine and Todd Duffee’s record-setting 7-second knockout of Tim Hague to win “Knockout of the Night” for UFC 102, as he scored a one-punch KO of fellow middleweight contender Demian Maia in just 21-seconds.

“Submission of the Night” went to Jake Rosholt, who earned his first UFC win with a third-round arm-triangle submission of Chris Leben that put Leben out cold.

UFC 102 fell short of a sellout, but still drew an impressive 16,088 attendees for a $1.92 million live gate.

Fedor: “I have Nothing to Prove”

Taken from a recent interview with Fedor:
“Brett Rogers is a very strong opponent. He is a great opponent. And he has a really very heavy knockout punch. I do not read all the rumors and gossip that is published on the Internet. To tell you the truth, the offer from the UFC was not really the worthy one. And if they are able to give us a really good offer then maybe [one day] we could agree. Frankly speaking, when I am in the cage or ring I don’t feel like I have to prove something. There are a lot of people around me who feel I do, but I don’t think so. When I come into the ring or cage the only thing I’m thinking about is is Russia (and representing it). So I don’t think that I need to prove anything.”

Recent Strikeforce acquisition and the last man to hold the PRIDE FC heavyweight title, Fedor Emelianenko, doesn’t feel he has anything to prove, even if those around him do. Which is a little disappointing to say the least. It seems has Fedor may care more about his money than his legacy or his fans. You would be hard-pressed to find an MMA fan right now that wouldn’t want to see the Emelianenko in the Octagon. However, the reigning World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) heavyweight champion next faces the heavy-handed Brett Rogers in what will be the Russian’s Strikeforce debut. Rogers is fresh off a devastating 22-second knockout of former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski, which pushed his record to 10-0. Does he have enough weapons to take out “The Last Emperor” who is riding a 26 fight win streak? I sincerely doubt it. If we learn anything from this fight, it will be that Fedor is in the wrong place.
