Belfort earned his title shot with a knockout of former middleweight champion Rich Franklin in a September catch weight bout, which also marked his return to the promotion.
Silva last defended his middleweight belt against Thales Leites at UFC 97 last April. His last fight, however, was an August first round destruction of Forrest Griffin in a light heavyweight bout.

Sources close to Fightburger.com have been told that; Nogueira’s manager Ed Soares confirmed the fight and that his client will be facing the undefeated heavyweight contender.

With the Ultimate Fighting Championship in desperate need of securing a main event match-up due to the health of current heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar the organization has made another interesting fight as Antonio ‘Minotauro’ Nogueira (32-5-1) and Cain Velasquez (7-0) will be meeting at UFC 108 on January 2, 2010 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Sources close to Fightburger.com have been told that; Nogueira’s manager Ed Soares confirmed the fight and that his client will be facing the undefeated heavyweight contender.

However, Heavy.com reports they have spoken to a source within the UFC saying the bout is yet to be finalized although it is in the works.

Should the contest take place at UFC 108 it will in fact be the toughest test to date for Cain Velasquez as Nogueira is very well versed in all aspects of the fight game with dangerous Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and good stand-up striking as well, but Velasquez is very hungry and will be just as tough a test for Nogueira as well with his punishing ground and pound style.

Most likely the winner of this potential bout will be receiving a shot at the UFC heavyweight championship as Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin will still either have their title fight take place at UFC 108 or at UFC 109 in early February.

We were the first to put forwarder the rumour that a potential matchup between Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama could be happening as the main event of the UFC Australia card which is still unofficially slated at this point for February.

Now it seems that Wanderlei Silva vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama will be going ahead as Akiyama has spoken with MMA journalist Tony Loiseieur and confirmed he will be the next opponent for The Axe Murder.
Akiyama stopped short of saying if the bout will take place at UFC 110 which is unofficially set for Las Vegas in early February or at UFC 111 which is also unofficially intended for late February at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.

Other names that have been rumoured for the UFC Australia card are Frank Trigg, Matter Serra and local fighters such as UFC veteran Elvis Sinosic, UFC Light Heavyweight prospect Jamie Tahuna and Bellator Middleweight Champion and Cuban turned Aussie Hector Lombard.

A fight between two fighters that are not known for anything else beside their striking are rumoured to be in the works for UFC 107. The UFC’s latest The Ultimate Fighter reality television show acquisition Kimbo Slice (4-1) may face the heavy handed Houston Alexander (9-4).

Alexander who was riding a three fight losing streak before being sent out into the UFC wilderness to find some form managed a first round TKO over Sherman Pendergarst at Adrenaline IV in September. Kimbo’s progress in The Ultimate Fight is unknown as the season is still playing out as the season hasn’t reached the end. Roy Nelson eliminated Kimbo Slice in their match but many believe Kimbo will get a second shot at making the finals.

According to Five Ounces of Pain the fight has not been signed but at least one fight has been officially approached by the UFC in regards to the match up.

The godfather of ground and pound Mark “The Hammer” Coleman has been reported have pulled out of his upcoming clash with Tito “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” Ortiz. Ortiz made the unconfirmed announcement via his Twitter page today, this is what he said: Coleman, coleman, coleman to bad he sissies out!!! Who’s next??? I’m kicking someone’s ass on Nov 21st!

Tito is known for, well, being Tito Ortiz who likes to talk himself up and stretch the truth a lot. The fact is that if Coleman is out the chances that he sissied out are slim if you consider that he has faced such notable fighters like Fedor Emelianenko, Cro Cop and Shogun Rua, Ortiz simply pales in comparison. Also consider that Coleman would be missing out on a big payday if he misses this fight, so the ageing fighter could be legitimately injured.

Suggestions have already started coming in for Tito’s replacement oppent for UFC 106 in November. A re-match with Rashad Evans seems to be a forum favourite at the moment.

(UPDATE)
Coleman’s withdrawal from UFC 106 is believed to be caused by a tear to his medial collateral ligaments. There has been no official announcement from the UFC if this fight will be postponed until a later date or if a replacement for Coleman will be found in time for Ortiz in time for UFC 106.

Stay tuned as this story develops.

Fightburger.com has heard on the grape vine that a middle weight match up between Yoshihiro Akiyama and Wanderlei Silva is being considered.

The UFC’s most promising import, Yoshihiro Akiyama who has fully recovered from an injury to his eye that required surgery after his “Fight of the Night” victory over Alan Belcher at UFC 100 has revealed his plans to train at Xtreme Couture MMA to Sherdog.com.

Akiyama will be travelling to Las Vegas in October to work on his striking with Shawn Tompkins. This will not be the first time this pair has worked together as Tompkins said “he first worked with the 2006 K-1 Hero’s tournament champion behind the scenes at UFC 97 last April in Montreal”.

The former coach of the Los Angeles Anacondas of the now defunct promotion International Fight League didn’t have the answer to who Akiyama’s next opponent would be. Fightburger.com has heard on the grape vine that a middle weight match up between Yoshihiro Akiyama and Wanderlei Silva is being considered.

Wanderlei Silva who is also recovering from surgery and is expected to return to the octagon in February 2010 and Fightburger.com has been the first to speculate that his return may coincide with the UFC’s first trip down under to Sydney, Australia. Other chatter doing the rounds about this potential fight indicate that it could take place at UFC 108 in January. With big name fighters expected already on the UFC 108 card, Wanderlei Silva vs Yoshihiro Akiyama would surely make this the most stacked UFC card in a long time.

Fightburger.com considers that this rumour may have some merit as Tompkins has worked with Wanderlei Silva previously and Akiyama could be training with Tompkins in preparation for the rumoured showdown.

Both Henderson and Marquardt are eyeing rematches with 185-pound king Anderson Silva, who could be available to fight by November after failing to undergo a previously-reported elbow surgery that was to sideline him until early next year.

Henderson (25-7), who’s currently a free agent but expected to re-sign with the UFC, is riding a three-fight win streak since his 2008 loss to Silva, including a second-round knockout of Michael Bisping in July. Marquardt (29-8-2), who knocked out Demian Maia in just 21-seconds in August, has also won three-straight and is 4-1 since his 2007 loss to Silva.

UFC 105 is expected to air on Spike TV and also features Michael Bisping vs. Denis Kang and Dan Hardy vs. Dong Hyun Kim.
With Couture’s age he will most likely need a 7-12 month lay off before he fights again so we will have to wait a while before we get to see Randy fight at 205lbs. But if Randy makes the drop who should he fight?

Really there are two categories for a potential light heavyweight opponent. The first category are the “legacy” bouts/fighters.

Tito Ortiz – rematch of their UFC 44 title fight.

Mark Coleman – He’s old, Randy’s old. Seems to make sense. Although, I wouldnt bet on it. Mark trained with Randy for his previous bout against Stephen Bonner. Not to mention, Coleman may die in his upcoming fight against Tito.

Wanderlei Silva – One of those dream match-ups from earlier this decade. But, again, Wandy and Randy were training partners when Silva moved to Vegas. This only ended recently when Wandy opened his own gym.

Chuck Liddell – The fourth chapter could generate some serious PPV revenue. But, excluding casual fans, who would really want to see this fight?

Dan Henderson – Henderson wants to fight at 205lbs. if he isn’t fighting for the 185lbs. title.

Rich Franklin – If the UFC ever lets him stay at light heavyweight we could have a former champion bout.

Vitor Belfort – Depending on how Belfort’s second UFC run goes we could be seeing this fight again.

The second grouping concerns fighters who are currently contending for the 205lbs. title.

Lyoto Machida – Current champion.

Mauricio “Shogun” Rua – current number one contender.

Rashad Evans

Quinton “Rampage” Jackson

Antonio Rogerio Nogueira – just entered the UFC but could be one or two fights away from a title shot.

Noticeable absent names.

Forrest Griffin – Griffin’s loss to Anderson Silva eliminates him from the running as of this moment.

Matt Hamill – Hamill would need a noticeable win to even be considered. But stylistically this would be a great fight for Randy.

Brandon Vera – Did you see his last fights?

Jon Jones – unless the UFC wants to Randy to be the sacrificial lamb led to the slaughter this seems unlikely.

Thiago Silva – another exciting light heavyweight fighter but a fight wouldn’t generate the PPV buzz required.

Luiz Cane – see above
